Fear keeps us trapped. Trust opens us up.

TRUST is a word that keeps coming up time and again. Trust in the process, trust in your body, trust that you have the answer, trust universal intelligence. Trust in the present moment.

We can have a weird relationship with trust. People say "trust no-one", but I wonder how life plays out when you trust no-one, nothing or yourself? Some people trust only themselves and no-one else, whereas some trust only others and not themselves. I wonder whether this keeps us trapped in a cycle of fear, which leads to control, which leads to stress and dis-ease in the body and mind. It is self-limiting. If we can lean into trust, maybe we can start to open up.

We don’t see things as they are, we see things as we are” (Anais Nin)

Trust the present moment. Leaning into the present moment, trusting that it can offer a deep insight into how and who we are, can have a profound impact on our existence. In class. we have been accessing a deeper connection beyond just the physical body, beyond the stream of thoughts and the movement of energy and emotion. The present moment is a space holder for all that is at that time; we can hold all of our experience in the present moment. With dedication we can be aware of the space between each thought - even if it is fleeting, once you have and sensed it, you want more. With curiosity we can ponder what that space is - deep peace? the true essence of who we are? our soul? consciousness? or a deep unwavering truth? Or of course this and so much more.

Trust what the body is telling you. It is amazing how the body responds and provides the answers. This might seem like absolute nonsense, but once you have felt it, you know it is true. Often we travel through this life responding to stimuli outside of ourselves, other people's opinions, limiting stories, distractions, busyness and noise. We are reacting to what is presented to us. Often our body is telling us to slow down (or move), asking us to listen, but we ignore it and choose to direct our attention to external noise. Then we get ill, we get anxious, we get injured. We also look outside of our own body for answers. When we deeply trust ourselves we can use our inner wisdom to guide our responses, our decisions and our purpose. It is ever present but often silenced by our distraction and distrust.

Trust in your suffering. If, as you read this, you are feeling a bit blurgh and fed up or life really has thrown all of it's worst at you. Know and truly believe that there is something you will take from it all. Trust that there is some light to be had from the darkness. It is at our worst that we really understand ourselves, learn about others and life as a whole - "No mud, no lotus". (Thich Nhat Hahn).

Trust universal intelligence. This is a big concept and topic, and maybe deserves a blog of it's own. For now though, if we choose to be open to all possibilities; that there is more to life than what we can see and experience through our 5 senses, we will feel it. If we choose not too, we won't.

Trust the timing of your life. A HUGE part of trust is leaning into where you are now. Growing up, I always wanted to be doing something other than what I was actually doing. I remember this feeling of wanting to be able to DO IT ALREADY. I would just go for it, and hope for the best because I couldn't wait. The consequence of this though, was usually unsuccessful because I wasn't ready - I crashed my friends jet ski when I was a teenager because I was too eager to wait and listen to learn how to actually break! Oops. I rushed everywhere. My natural tendency was "what's next?" because it felt like something was missing. Yoga and mindful meditation has taught me SO much about learning to listen, learning to be patient, learning that our life takes a particular course and we have to trust where we are at the moment. In the zen Buddhist tradition a key dharma is ripening - the teaching that our awakening cannot be rushed, allow the process (even when it is ugly) to unfold it is own time. A full, abundant, happy existence is not to be consumed, or gained - it is already there waiting for you. When we accept how we feel, where we are on our life path and release the striving, we can relax and lean into what is, rather than what should be. We can continue to grow, but not from a place of lack, fear and distrust, but from a place of openness to all possibilities, patience and of course a deep trust in the seen and the unseen. We can then ask"what's next?" with a joyous anticipation and excitement about what the world has to offer and what we have to offer the world.
